Medellin long weekend: sunrise miles + coffee culture
Medellín has spent the last decade becoming one of South America's most talked-about cities, and once you're there, it's obvious why. Built into a valley and climbing up the mountains on every side, the city earned its nickname, the City of Eternal Spring, for a climate that barely shifts year round, perfect running weather every single morning. It's also become a genuine running city in its own right: locals fill Parque Lineal La Presidente and the paths around El Poblado at sunrise, hill repeats up Cerro El Volador and Cerro Nutibara are a local rite of passage, and the run club culture is thriving.
Beyond the miles, Medellín is a city to move through slowly too: the murals and stairways of Comuna 13, once one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in the world and now a symbol of the city's transformation, the postcard-colored lake town of Guatapé and the climb up El Peñol, and a coffee culture that runs deeper than a morning cup.
This trip is for you if run club is the best part of your week and you want to explore a new city with the awesome people you've met through your running community.

the plan
Day 1: Arrive + Welcome Dinner
Touch down in Medellin and settle into your boutique hotel in El Poblado, a leafy energetic hub. In the late afternoon, lace up for an easy shakeout run through Parque Lleras and Parque del Poblado - flat, social and lined with the kind of street life that makes the city feel alive at every hour. Then join the group for a welcome dinner at a local restaurant, kicking off a week built on the idea that a run and a meal are both better shared.
Day 2: Laureles + Communa 13
Cross the river into Laureles, a neighborhood of quiet, tree-canopied streets and a slower, more local rhythm. This morning's guided run follows the Parque Lineal La Presidente, tracing the water with the option to push farther and tackle the climb up Cerro El Volador for those chasing a bigger effort and a wide view over the city. Refuel with a stop at a neighborhood coffee shop, because in a country built on coffee this is a non-negotiable.
In the afternoon, head to Communa 13, once one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in the world and now one of its great stories of transformation, its stairways and walls covered in murals, hip hop and the work of a community that rebuilt itself through art.
Unwind before bed with a yoga class.
Day 3: Guatapé Day Trip
Leave the city behind for the day and head northeast to Guatapé, a lakeside town so saturated in color that every building looks freshly painted for a postcard. The main event is El Peñol, a granite monolith rising out of the landscape, its 740 steps zigzagging straight up the rock face to a viewpoint over a sprawling reservoir dotted with green islands, easily one of the most dramatic panoramas in the country. Wander Guatapé's streets after the climb, where colorful zócalos (the decorative panels lining the base of each house) tell stories of the families who live there, and settle in for lunch by the water. For those with energy left, an easy run or walk along the waterfront closes out the afternoon before the drive back to Medellín and a free evening to rest.
Day 4: Coffee culture + Pilates
Start the day at a slower pace with a Pilates class (optional). In the afternoon, head into the Antioquia countryside to a working coffee farm, where the terrain shifts from city to green, rolling hills stitched with coffee plants. Walk the fields, learn how a cherry becomes a cup, and taste the difference between coffee that traveled thousands of miles to reach you and coffee picked steps from where you're standing. The group reconvenes back in Medellín for dinner, trading stories from a day spent slowing down and tasting the region properly.
Day 5: Departure + Sad Goodbyes
Close the week the way it started: on foot, together. Choose between a sunrise climb up Cerro Nutibara, one of the city's iconic hills topped with a replica Antioquian village and sweeping views as the sun comes up over the valley, or a mellower final loop through El Poblado for those who'd rather ease into the last day. Reconvene for a farewell brunch before heading back to the airport.
