Baja mexico long weekend:
fins, friends + fish tacos

Imagine starting your day swimming alongside whale sharks in the turquoise waters of the Sea of Cortez, spending the afternoon sharing fish tacos by the waterfront, and ending the evening watching the sun set over the malecón with a group of new friends.

Join Sandra of Origin Travels and Meredith of Meredith on the Map for a long weekend in Baja California Sur, Mexico, a destination known for its incredible marine life, laid-back charm, and some of the most beautiful coastline in the country.

Together, we'll snorkel with whale sharks and playful sea lions, explore La Paz through the eyes of a local mural artist, practice yoga under the Baja sun, and experience the flavours and culture that make this region so special.

This is the first trip hosted by Sandra and Meredith together, made for the solo travellers who can go alone but don't want to, who know the best memories are the belly laughs and spontaneous moments that come with travelling in a group of like-minded women. The ones who can book the flight but still want the ease of a curated experience and the comfort of a built-in friend group.

If you've been craving sunshine, ocean air, meaningful conversations, and the kind of trip you'll still be talking about months later, you don't want to miss this one.

Where We're Staying_BAJA.png

your stay

We're staying right on the La Paz malecón at Hotel H Blue Malecon, a boutique hotel that feels effortlessly coastal.

Why we picked it:

- Minimal, modern rooms with A/C (2 beds)

- Easy access to everything

-In the heart of it all

-A rooftop bar for cocktails and one of the best sunset views in the city

-A rooftop pool with the sea as the background (we're picturing end of day yap sessions here)

the plan

Day 1: Arrive + Welcome Dinner

Arrive SJD, transfer to hotel. The group chat meets IRL and we'll head to a great local restaurant for a welcome dinner.

Day 2: hello whale sharks!!

We start off this trip by visiting the whale sharks in the Bay of La Paz. Each year the whale sharks congregate
here from roughly mid-November through late April, and we have the opportunity to observe and snorkel
with them. DYK: whales are mammals, sharks are fish, and the whale shark gets its moniker from being the
largest fish on the planet. At up to 59 feet and 15 tons it is definitely a whale of a shark!

Lunch along the malecon at one of the best local taco joints in all of Mexico where we can enjoy ceviche and indulge in Baja California Sur's contribution to world cuisine: the fish taco! Your guide will share some of the history around the taco and Baja's place in the taco world.

Dinner on your own and free time in the evening.

Day 3: Art, culture and movement

We love a walking tour to get to know the place through a local lens and today we're touring with renowned muralist Uli Martinez. Uli will share some of the history, lore and conservation efforts of La Paz through his murals and the work of other artists.

Stretch it out in a relaxing yoga class with a local instructor in the afternoon - downward dog under the Baja sun is just what your body needs.

Day 4: Underwater wildlife exploration

Today is a marine wildlife extravaganza of a day! We stop by our bodega, get our gear, hop in the boats, then it’s off to the unbelievable joy of swimming and playing with the sea lion puppies at the permanent sea lion colony of Los Islotes. These fun-loving marine mammals love playing and interacting with humans, and are always disappointed that we can never keep up a game of tag as long as they can. Getting to the sea lion colony is half the fun of the day, as we regularly see dolphins, whales, mantas, sea turtles, coastal birds and more on the way there and back. We cap off this wonderful day with a delicious picnic lunch at one of the gorgeous beaches on the incomparable Isla Espiritu Santo. It’s an absolutely fabulous day!

In the evening, enjoy a guided taco and ceviche crawl. During this epic taco tour our local insider guides will take you to three of their favorite local joints to sample not only fish tacos, but other types of tacos drawing on the

area’s bounties of land and sea. You might find several different types of ceviche out there too!

Day 5: Departure + Sad Goodbyes

In the morning, we’ll have breakfast together and say our goodbyes

While we do our best to stick to this itinerary, some activities or venues may not be available, or we will experience weather changes and if this happens, we will work to find a comparable alternative.

meet your hosts

My name is Meredith and I’ve been solo traveling for 10+ years, visiting 50 countries and five continents and hosting group trips to Iceland, South Africa and Egypt. Latin America is my favorite place on earth and I meet so many people who want to travel there but may be worried about safety, navigating without speaking Spanish or simply having enough PTO days! This trip is designed to give you a bougie budget, small group experience in my personal travel style I’ve honed for years. This means yummy food, taking gorg pics, making new friends, exploring nature, seeking local experiences and dancing the night away. I can’t wait to meet you and introduce you to Latin America travel! Follow along at @meredithonthemap on TikTok and Instagram.

My name is Sandra and I'm the owner of Origin Travels, a group trip host, and travel advisor. I've travelled to more than 60 countries across six continents and some of my favourite travel memories have less to do with the destination and everything to do with the people I shared it with.

That's why I started hosting trips. I believe our bodies are made for more than editing Excel spreadsheets, and that some of life's best moments happen when we step away from our desks and into the world around us.

At Origin Travels, we create gently active, wildly memorable adventures for young professionals who want to travel, meet new people and make the most of their vacation days. Whether it's hiking to a hidden viewpoint, sharing a meal with locals, or laughing with new friends over sunset drinks, I'm passionate about designing experiences that bring together people on the same wavelength.

I can't wait to explore Baja with you, introduce you to this incredible corner of Mexico, and help create the kind of memories you'll still be talking about years from now.
